Bullard will discuss GIPSA’s proposed competition rule and why the big meatpackers are against it; the current controversy swirling around the Beef Checkoff, and, if time allows, the pending free trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea, Colombia and Panama and how they harm the U.S. cattle industry.

R-CALF USA is a one-member/one-vote organization. Voting members must own cattle. Activities carried out by R-CALF USA for the benefit of the U.S. cattle industry are funded exclusively by the independent cattle producers who pay their membership dues and by cattle producers, main-street businesses, and other individuals who participate in and contribute to fund-raising events.

R-CALF USA works on various issues that affect independent U.S. cattle producers, such as country-of-origin labeling, livestock price reporting, animal health concerns, captive supplies and packer ownership of livestock, as well as various trade agreements.

CEO Bill Bullard Receives President’s Award
from Nebraska Farmers Union

Lincoln, Neb. – At its recent annual convention, the Nebraska Farmers
Union (NEFU) presented R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard with the
organization’s highest honor, the President’s Award, for service to
family farm agriculture.

“Bill Bullard is a man of vision, values, courage and integrity who has tirelessly championed the interests of family farmers and ranchers,” said Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen. “He has become a respected national leader on issues facing the cattle industry, including country-of-origin labeling (COOL), concentration and non-competitive marketing practices in the meat packing industry, unfair trade practices and animal health issues.

“Bill Bullard is not confused about whether he works for U.S. cow/calf producers or U.S. based international meat packers,” Hansen continued. “Bill Bullard consistently champions the interests of U.S. cow/calf producers. We need that kind of clear and strong leadership at a time when all too many livestock commodity organizations fail to stand up for our traditional American system of independent family farmers and ranchers efficiently and responsibly producing safe, high quality food for our nation. We appreciate his presence on the national stage.”

“As R-CALF USA’s CEO, I am honored to accept this award from the Nebraska Farmers Union, an organization that has been aggressively fighting to improve the economic condition of Nebraska farmers and ranchers even longer than R-CALF USA has been in existence,” Bullard said. “I appreciate NEFU’s strong leadership on key cattle market and cattle trade-related issues, both in the state and nationally, and look forward maximizing our individual organizational strengths by working together.”

Bullard joined R-CALF USA in April 2001 as its chief executive officer. The group is headquartered in Billings, Mont., and has members in 47 states. Before joining R-CALF USA, Bullard served as the executive director of the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission. He also previously worked for the National Farmers Union, the Oklahoma Farmers Union and the Nebraska Farmers Union.
