Obama was starting to go in the right direction. In Ohio. He had some conviction. NAFTA bashing is a bit 20th Century, but it was the right track.
Then he told Fortune this:
Does that mean his rhetoric was overheated and amplified? "Politicians are always guilty of that, and I don't exempt myself," he answered.
Renegotiating NAFTA was a bit aggressive, if indistinct. But now:
What Obama says now is that he believes in "opening up a dialogue" with trading partners Canada and Mexico "and figuring to how we can make this work for all people."
I can't endorse folks. But I can try to get an issue elected. As meaningless as my words are in the maelstrom of blogs and news.
Obama could have stood on principle. Maybe he will. He is for Asian currency reform. I'll give him that. But he seems to be tacking to the center on the trade issue. Whatever that means. Somewhere between the wacko free traders and the Very. Serious. People in DC. Chasing those darned swing voters. Revealing his lack of principle.
We want principle in this country. Principle built it. The principle here is that America's trade policy should serve America. American jobs. American farmers. American factories. That happens to be good for the world too, by the way. Because we can then buy other stuff, unlike now.
The free trade stuff is garbage. A steaming pile of garbage. If you listen to it you are stupid. If you propound it, you are a liar. Because it has failed. On every objective measure. It has failed. The public knows it.
Listen up Obama. McCain just went to Colombia. Campaigning for the U.S. presidency. In Colombia. Do you see an opening? Maybe? Or are your advisors advising caution. A path to no offense. A path of safety.
