The Air Force awarded a huge 179 plane contract to a Northrup Grummon/Airbus joint effort, denying Boeing. The planes will provide in-air refuleing to military aircraft.
Senator
Kay Bailey Hutchinson was so certain Boeing would get the contract that
her office had already sent out a press release praising Boeing for its
victory.
Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential
nominee, scuttled an earlier attempt by the Air Force to award the
contract to Boeing, opening the door for the Northrop-Airbus bid.
Senator McCains campaign spokeswoman referred calls to his Senate office, which could not be reached for comment.
