U.S. Companies Help China Techno Crackdown |

China jails and tortures dissidents and reporters. Kills people in Tiananman Square. Monitors and shuts down the internet. And U.S. companies are helping. It is good for trade. Trade always wins... even over national security.
Honeywell, GE, United Technologies and IBM are helping China design and install a high-tech public surveillance system. It's for the Olympics. The government will install cameras in places of religious worship and internet cafes.
The Commerce Department bans the sale of "crime control or detection instruments or equipment" to China. Except when it does not. Like when big companies want to fill big orders from totalitarian regimes.
There are good reasons for the ban. Too bad the ban is in name only.
How much do you want to bet they aren't going to take the cameras down after the Olympics?
