This arrest
of 774 people in China is more than shutting down factories. It
was a criminal arrest, suggesting the food products made were
particularly abhorent.
We can't rely on foreign
inspection here, any more than any other country should rely upon our
inspections. Our food safety system was built up over 80 years,
and now is shredded by uninspected imports.
Meanwhile,
Trade statistics, though, show that with few exceptions, Chinas
exports to the rest of the world continue to soar, including exports of
toys, seafood and agricultural products.
Trade by the multinationals is always the priority. If people
get sick, well, that's just the cost of doing business and gutting our
economy.
And the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is fighting Congress' efforts
to strengthen its ability to inspect and recall dangerous toys.
The Administration also opposes provisions in a bill to protect
whistle-blowers in industries regulated by the Commission.
Have they no shame?
