Mattel told the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection that it was sorry about the lead paint.  

“Our standards were ignored and our rules were broken,” [Mattel chairman Robert A. Eckert] said. “We were let down and we let you down.” 

Nice words.  Too bad Mattel BLOCKED committee staff members from visiting Mattel plants in China and talking to hong Kong executives overseeing them, an accusation leveled by several lawmakers at the hearing.  

Hubris is, I think, the right description.
