Mattel told the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer
Protection that it was sorry about the lead paint.
Our standards were ignored and our rules were broken, [Mattel
chairman Robert A. Eckert] said. We were let down and we let you
down.
Nice words. Too bad Mattel BLOCKED committee staff
members from visiting Mattel plants in China and talking to hong Kong
executives overseeing them, an accusation leveled by several lawmakers
at the hearing.
Hubris is, I think, the right description.
