A Senate hearing today.  Mattel's CEO apologized for the lead paint in toys.  Tough talk by Senators.  Just talk.  Senators "called for" changes and stuff.  Here are some quotes from the story.

“This has got to stop,” Senator Amy Klobuchar, Democrat of Minnesota. “It is time for us to take action.”

Jerry Storch, chairman of Toys “R” Us, the leading toy retailer, said the government and toy manufacturers should find a way to hasten the recall of products after flaws are discovered. Codes should also be printed onto toys so parents can more easily identify a recalled product, Mr. Storch said.

“We need to start pulling the club out,” said Senator Sam Brownback, Republican of Kansas, instructing Ms. Nord to tell the authorities in China that “this is the way it is going to be, and I am going to make every tool I got to make sure that it happens.”

Nancy A. Nord, the acting chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said she agreed with many of the proposals for change, acknowledging in particular that the agency’s laboratory in Gaithersburg, Md., is woefully inadequate.
