Ian Fletcher's recent book is called "Free Trade Doesn't Work: What Should Replace it and Why."  The book deconstructs and destroys the notion of free trade as a viable strategy.  CPA has listed the book as one of our Recommended Books.

The book is now on sale at Amazon.  The link to purchase it is here, and I recommend that you get a copy.

Fletcher uses hard economics to invalidate free trade at the theoretical level. He documents, with solid data, the very poor historical performance of free trade... showing that no country in the world developed using the theory, and that countries later adopting the approach destroyed their past developmental successes. The double whammy of gutting both the theoretical - and the actual performance - underpinnings of "free trade" is devastating.

He also shows that free trade has harmed both First World and Third World countries. Whether you are an America First-er or an internationalist makes no difference. The performance of current trade policy has been harmful under both views.

Fletcher then lays out a strategy for building and sustaining a diversified economic sector that grows, and uses trade as a part of that strategy. Achieving a successful policy of producing jobs and wealth is no longer a mystery. The latter part of the book addresses belief of policy makers, pundits and economists who may acknowledge that free trade has caused harm, but fear that a round of so-called "protectionism" could only be worse. That fear is unfounded, and Fletcher provides a logical framework for a new strategy.

Legislative Fly-In

CPA will hold its Second Annual Legislative Fly-In on March 2-4, 2010.  This is a powerful opportunity for us to work together to advance trade reform in the halls of Congress.  We need to bring the concerns of the grass roots to our legislators.

This is efficient advocacy, well worth your time.  We make all the meeting arrangements with legislators or their staff, we put together materials, we plan a message, and we pack meetings together in a concentrated period of time.  You make a bigger impact with your time using only three of the 365 days in the year.

Click here to sign up for the CPA Fly In.
