The Republicans picked up two Dem-held governorships last night.  The polls prior to the election were generally more unreliable, in my view, than those preceding last November's election.

Governors

VA-Gov:  Bob McDonnell (R) beat Creigh Deeds (D) by 59-41%.  Tim Kaine (D) held the office.  Virginia has term limits of one term for governors.

NJ-Gov:  Jon Corzine (D) was the unpopular incumbent in this blue state.  Federal prosecutor Christopher Christie (R) beat Corzine by 5 points, 49-44%.

U.S. House

NY-23:  Bill Owens (D) took this red Northern New York district from the Republicans.  Obama named incumbent John McHugh (R) as Secretary of the Army, thus triggering a special election.  The Dems had virtually no hope of winning, but local Republicans nominated Dede Scozzafava who was deemed too liberal by many prominent Republicans.  The Conservative Party nominated Doug Hoffman.  Hoffman received endorsements from Sarah Palin, Tim Pawlenty and others.  Scozzafava withdrew and endorsed the Democrat.  Hoffman seemed to have the lead in the polls but was beaten 49-46%.

McHugh had a mixed, but slightly positive record on trade.  He voted against CAFTA, the Peru FTA and the Oman FTA.  He was also a fair currency bill co-sponsor last year, though not this year.  But he also opposed trade enforcement legislation that he should have supported.

CA-10:  Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi (D) beat David Harmer (R) in this blue district, 53-43%.  Obama nominated incumbent Ellen Tauscher (D) to the post of Undersecretary of Arms Control thereby causing this special election to fill a vacancy.  No surprises.

March 2-4, The Coalition for a Prosperous America

Legislative Fly-In

CPA will hold its Second Annual Legislative Fly-In on March 2-4, 2010.  This is a powerful opportunity for us to work together to advance trade reform in the halls of Congress.  We need to bring the concerns of the grass roots to our legislators.

This is efficient advocacy, well worth your time.  We make all the meeting arrangements with legislators or their staff, we put together materials, we plan a message, and we pack meetings together in a concentrated period of time.  You make a bigger impact with your time using only three of the 365 days in the year.

Click here to sign up for the CPA Fly In.

CPA has a special offer--limited time only: the first 50 registrants get a free copy of Ian Fletcher's new book: Free Trade Doesn't Work.  This is a highly acclaimed book about trade policy and the needed changes therein.

Agenda:

March 2, 2010:  2p to 6p - Group meeting for training, talking points and team assignments

March 3-4, 2010:  Hill visits

Place:  Capitol Skyline Hotel, 10 I ("Eye") Street SW, Washington, DC 20024

Once you sign up with CPA, reserve your room at the Capitol Skyline Hotel by calling 202.488.7500.  You should book for the evenings of March 2 and March 3.
