The Presidential Candidates are coming around on China currency manipulation.

Republican Duncan Hunter and several Democrats are getting better on the topic.  Getting the issue talked about on the campaign trail is important. Candidates taking good positions is even better.  Read more.

Duncan Hunter is the best, having sponsored the Ryan-Hunter bill which would mathematically impose counterveiling duties on Chinese imports that are mathematically equivalent to the degree of currency manipulation.

John Edwards issued this strong statement on May 23, 2007:

"The Bush Administration should stop sitting on its hands and actually do something to save American jobs. We have known for years that China is manipulating its currency to boost its trade advantage with the United States, and working families are suffering.

"Because China is a member of the World Trade Organization, we have tools to use to hold China accountable for its currency manipulation. Once again, I call on President Bush to use his authority and end this unfair Chinese advantage. Simply pointing fingers at China cannot substitute for getting our own economy in order, but neither can we allow China to continue policies which harm American workers and the entire global trading system."

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have co-sponsored, as of this month, new legislation to handle the same problem.  But their bill has a problem.  It is riddled with conditions and exceptions to prevent actual action on currency.  So even if the bill is enacted, it hedges so much as to be virtually worthless.
