Aggies split on trade PDF Print E-mail

It is unfortunate that some ag groups keep pushing the same free trade agreements.

The American Farm Bureau Federation is for the Colombia, Panama and South Korea FTAs.

National Farmers Union opposese the Colombia FTA, as well as the other two FTAs.

R-CALF USA opposes Colombia and Panama, but has expressed willingess on South Korea if the beef issues are resolved.

National Pork Producers Council favors the Colombia FTA and is pushing for it.  There is a lot of per capita consumption of pork data available on the internet, but Colombia does not register.  I'm not sure who will buy the pork.

The historic ag trade surplus has been declining over the past 20 years of FTAs.  Last year was an exception, because high commodity prices made the value of exports higher, though the volume was not necessarily higher.  Here is the trend from 1995 to 2007.
