A whole nuther food category contaminated with melamine in China.

Hong Kong food inspectors have found eggs imported from northeast China to be contaminated with high levels of melamine, the toxic industrial additive at the heart of an adulteration scandal in Chinese milk products.

Its probably in the animal feed.  If the melamine merchants spike the human food with melamine to artificially - and toxically - boost the protein level then they are likely to do it in animal feed.

Just to recap what I've written before, melamine is high in nitrogen.  Protein is high in nitrogen.  Lab tests that look for protein in food products actually test for nitrogen, because no molecules other than protein contain nitrogen in animal and plant products.  But if you add melamine, then there is a high level of nitrogen found, though actual protein levels are low.  You can then sell the stuff as high protein product and make money on it.

In the U.S., there have been animal feed regulations for years requiring labeling and testing of nutrient content for protein.  To prevent fraud.
