Sen. Joe Biden on trade from SentinelSource.com

Biden paraphrased:

"A president's job is to create jobs not export them."

"We need to enforce trade agreements."

"I would call another Plaza Conference like in the 1980's.  ... Chinese manipulate their currency by 40%, and we do nothing about it."

"They [Chinese] need our market a lot more than we need them to buy our T Bills.  A lot more.  Why don't we get tough."

"Why don't we enforce agreements relating to piracy in China?  We don't do anything."

"If you look at my record I used to be a free trader, but now I'm really a fair trader."

"Why are we afraid of these guys?"

"We won't even vote to sanction China for human rights violations because we fear offending them.  That promotes the mindset in China that they don't have to abide by international rules."

Biden's paraphrase sounds good. But his voting record is far less impressive. That record portrays him more as a free trader, than a fair trader. If he's had a change of heart, he needs to be a lot more forthright with it in his speeches.

Well, finally, a clear, strong message from a national Democrat on the number one trade problem -- China. Maybe key campaign staffers like Dan Tarullo will take a page from Biden and drop their mealy-mouthed groveling before Wall Street interests. And then, maybe, just maybe, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will move some legislation this monthto help get the recalcitrant Chinese regime to the table for a new Plaza Accord. This is hardly a new idea. Secretaries Snow and Paulson have been resisting it since 2003. It certainly won't happen on its own; a stick is needed to gain some leverage. So, pass meaningful legisltion, and pass it now. If the Democrat Congress were to do so, the Chinese would know that the jig is almost up. As icing on the cake, the Congress just might edge its approval rating higher than George W. Bush.
