The wacko free traders are still debating the Smoot Hawley Tariff. With themselves. Because nobody is proposing re-enacting Smoot Hawley.
The tariff debate is engaged in by those who don't understand trade, or who have not upgraded their understanding. By those who don't understand how currency, border taxes, imaginative foreign subsidies, lax food/product safety rules, are used to render tariffs irrelevant.
Foreign governments game the system. With a smile. Or a laugh.
And we're proud. Because we're free traders. Hooray for us.
So let's debate something else from the 1930's besides Smoot Hawley. But something equally as relevant. Like the merits of the design of a beautiful 1932 Ford Cabriolet. It's very shiny. And modern.
