How do Republicans take the Senate? PDF Print E-mail

A Republican takeover of the Senate is possible now in the November elections.  Dems have the lead by 59 (counting independents Sanders (VT) and Lieberman (CT)).  The path is clear, though not easy.

The 538 blog puts the big picture analysis this way:

Certainly, it's no longer that hard to chart a path under which the Republicans would gain the 10 Senate seats they'd need for a takeover. They are overwhelming favorites in North Dakota, strong favorites in Delaware, Arkansas and Nevada, modest favorites in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, and perhaps at least even-money in Illinois. Those are the eight obvious opportunities. Number nine would be California, where I'm a little bit skeptical of Carly Fiorina or Chuck DeVore's ability to defeat Barbara Boxer, but where Tom Campbell might have the goods. The tenth seat is tougher: Republicans would need a recruiting coup in Wisconsin (unlikely; Tommy Thompson just went to consult for a hedge fund), New York (less unlikely, but George Pataki would need to raise a lot of money very fast), or Washington (less unlikely, but Dino Rossi has kept a very low profile) -- or some kind of wild card, like Robert Byrd falling ill in West Virginia.

The Byrd wild card is not necessarily unlikely.  And West Virginia is not blue.  It is either red or purple.

But the Republicans also have to hold all the seats they now have.

The Democrats are competitive right now in Missouri, Ohio, New Hampshire, and Kentucky, could become that way in North Carolina and possibly Florida, and there's an outside chance they could get a wild card of their own like Arizona.

There also is the possibility of a Lieberman switch.  All in all, it is not hard to see the Republicans taking the Senate, but they need to sweep the field.

ITC Rejects Chinese Attempts to Reopen OCTG Case PDF Print E-mail

Last Friday the International Trade Commission rejected a request by 11 Chinese tubular producers to reopen the OCTG antidumping record to consider what the Chinese attorneys called “more current” information, which the Chinese claimed would negate the ITC’s finding that the OCTG imports posed a threat of injury to US mills. As a result of rejecting this request, the ITC's final decision in the antidumping case will be based on the same records compiled during the countervailing investigation, which contain information and data through September 2009. The ITC ruled in December to impose countervailing duties of 10%-16% and is expected to make a final decision in the antidumping case against Chinese OCTG imports in May.

We believe this was an attempt by the Chinese to help their case in the ongoing antidumping case where the stakes are a lot higher – the US Department of Commerce imposed preliminary antidumping duties of 36%-99% on Chinese OCTG last November.

Trade Act Reaches a Key Milestone PDF Print E-mail

CPA is an official supporter of the Trade Act.  We are pleased to report this very positive development.

New Trade Reform Majority

Dear Friends:

Thanks to your advocacy, the TRADE Act - the comprehensive reform bill that turns around our failed trade policy - has reached a key milestone. The bill has won support from over half the Democrats in the House of Representatives. That's right: because of you, we have a new trade reform majority!

The Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment (TRADE) Act officially became the majority position of House Democrats when longtime trade champion Rep. George Miller - the senior California Democrat who chairs the House Committee on Education and Labor - joined California's newly elected Rep. John Garamendi at a Bay Area press conference to announce their cosponsorship. The legislation now has 137 cosponsors, but to actually implement President Obama's campaign commitments to trade reform - to replace NAFTA and make sure future agreements work for most people - the TRADE Act must have even more sponsors.
