The New York Times released another regularly scheduled editorial piece whining about trade agreement fatigue.
With the global economy slowing, prices soaring for oil and food and protectionist passions boiling up everywhere, it is an especially dangerous time to give up on international trade negotiations. Unfortunately, the worlds leading trading nations seem ready to abandon the World Trade Organizations seven-year effort to reduce some of the worlds obstacles to trade.
The implication is that more trade agreements will bring down oil and food prices. But they do not say that directly. Because it is untrue. They just believe it. Belief is not fact. And the facts do not exist. |

Steve Erlanger expended some ink on the trade issue when writing about Obama's 200,000 person crowd in Germany.
First, here is the single paragraph from Obama's Berlin speech on trade:
This is the moment when we must build on the wealth that open markets have created, and share its benefits more equitably. Trade has been a cornerstone of our growth and global development. But we will not be able to sustain this growth if it favors the few, and not the many. Together, we must forge trade that truly rewards the work that creates wealth, with meaningful protections for our people and our planet. This is the moment for trade that is free and fair for all.

Look. Nobody is being endorsed here. But if a campaign sends me press releases that are right (or probably even wrong) on trade, I'll probably print them.
So here is Jack Davis again.
"Free trade and unchecked globalization are destroying the American middle
class".
Oh. Here are the basic election facts from New York's 26th District.
1. Bush beat Kerry in '04 by 12%
2. Reynolds beat Davis in '06 by 4%
3. Voter registration: 40% GOP, 32% Dem, 28% other
4. Dem candidates: Jack Davis and Jonathan Powers. Republican: Chris Lee

Jack Davis nearly unseated Tom Reynolds in 2006. Davis runs I Squared R Element Company in Akron, NY. Reynolds has announced he's not running. Davis is running as a Dem, and continues working the trade issues hard. Jonathan Powers is the other Democratic primary.
Davis' recent press release is below the fold.
