WTO: Country of origin is obsolete

Share

Paskal Lamy, the WTO chief, speaks (Manufacturing & Technology News, subscription only):

Today, “the concept of country of origin for manufactured goods has become gradually obsolete” as more products are “Made in the World.”

I’m thinking that it is more relevant than ever.  So do the export oriented, state-managed economies who win the trade game.  While we lose the trade game.

The U.S. livestock producers, who are defending their country of origin labeling law from the Canadians and Mexicans, would also disagree with Lamy.

There are serious questions to be asked about the WTO.  There is debate within the “smart trade” community about whether its benefits outweigh its harm.
