Rosanne Brown, Assistant Legislative Director, United Steelworkers

OVERVIEW: Scott Paul will present the results of the Alliance for American Manufacturing’s acclaimed study, An Assessment of Environmental Regulation of the Steel Industry of China. That well documented report concluded that: "Less stringent standards, lower industry expenditures on environmental controls, a decentralized regulatory structure, and a less effective enforcement program all result in levels of pollution from the Chinese steel industry that are nearly twenty times higher per ton of steel than in the U.S. in the case of overall emissions of particulate matter, and between two and six times higher in the case of other measures of pollutants levels. Roxanne Brown will discuss the implications of these findings for the on-going debate in the Unted States regarding the curbing of green house gasses.
